The Jakarta Post, Jakarta – The House of Representatives deems that the National Police have been over-reacting by planning to sue Tempo magazine for defamation.
“We hope the National Police not to be so reactive and to use a wiser verification method on the media such as to utilize the right to respond,” one of the House deputy speakers, Taufik Kurniawan, told reporters on Thursday.
The police recently planned to sue Tempo with defamation following the magazine’s reports about police officers having fat bank accounts.
The police deem that Tempo has humiliated the institution by displaying a fat police officer escorting three piggybanks on its cover.
Taufik said that if the police continued with its plan, then it would only ruin their image in the eyes of the public.
“I hope for better steps. Discuss this issue with the Press Council as the mediator,” he said.
