Press Council mediate police, Tempo

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta – Press Council brokered on Thursday a meeting between the National Police and Tempo magazine to settle their dispute over the weekly’s report of enormous wealth of several high-ranking officers.

Deputy chairman of the council Leo Sabam Batubara, Tempo senior executives and NationalPolice spokesman Insp. Edward Aritonang attended the meeting, which was held behind closed doors.

Last week’s edition of Tempo ran a cover story on the suspicious bank accounts of the police officers, a controversial issue that has been in the media spotlight since 2005.

Claiming the report libelous, the police plan to sue the magazine.
