Two police generals forgive ‘Tempo’

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta – Two of five police generals who were reported by Tempo weekly magazine to have amassed enormous amounts of money in their bank accounts have forgiven the magazine for the allegations.

National Police operational deputy chief Insp. Gen. Sylvanus Yulian Wenas said Thursday he had excused Tempo for “negative coverage” on him.

Slyvanus had handed the case to the police’s general crimes unit he said, as quoted by kompas.com.

He claimed he had not received Rp 10 billion (US$1.1 million) and US$670 from the director of PT HGW in July and August 2005, as had been stated in the magazine.

“I had nothing to do with the money. If I had received it I’d be happy,” he added.

Meanwhile, legal development division chief Insp. Gen. Badrodin Haiti refused to comment on the issue.

“Ask the general crimes unit,” he said shortly, adding that he would not file a lawsuit against the magazine.

This week’s edition of Tempo magazine, published Monday, ran a cover story on the suspicious bank accounts of several high-ranking officers, a controversial issue that has been in the media spotlight since 2005.
